History
In connection with the Soviet Katyusha, the Israeli army began working on constructing the new self-propelled rocket launchers. This project received the name MAR-290 Eshel ha- Yarden, and in 1968 started the production of self-propelled launchers of unguided missiles. The launcher consisted of four pipe guides the type of MLRS for firing unguided rockets with a caliber of 290 mm, and they mounted them on a crawler. There are two versions: mounted on the chassis of the Super Sherman (Sherman M-50 & Sherman M-51) medium tank, and mounted on the chassis of the British Centurion medium tank. The unguided missiles have a length of 5.45 meters and a weight of 600 kilograms. Additionally, the launcher is armed with a machine gun cal. 7.62 mm mounted between a mechanic-driver. The use of a self-propelled rocket launcher MAR-290 was introduced to equip by the Israeli army. They were first used in combat during the war in Lebanon in 1982. The shooting range of each rocket was forty kilometers, and each shot took ten seconds with the full reload of the rockets being around ten minutes.
